THREE palms and ONE crane in Darwin…

Just 2 weeks ago, I took part in a morning seminar about ‘positive psychology’. This happened as part of my part-time job which happens to involve working with people who happen to cause stress which happens to be NOT SO GOOD FOR YOU…so there….using 3 x “part” and a lot of “happens”…surely I could have used those words even more often in one sentence? Have to work on that one…

Besides feeling a strong empathy for animals (and not necessary people) I also tend to be just a tad suspicious when being offered an overly simplistic but ENORMOUSLY positive way to attack life’s obstacle run…so the byline ‘presented by Dr Happy’ was a cause of great concern in the life of this weathered cynic.

So. And yes, there were various buzz words and the odd video as well as the Chief Happiness Officer (not my choice of words here, folks!) doing his routine – but he kept it grounded and ‘common sense’ enough for me to not feel the urge to run away and demolish it all with the odd inappropriate remark of instant dismissal. Timing was rather good, too, as I’ve just come back from my last episode of ‘losing your mind in Asia’ and could do with a bit of a shift of that DARK, DARK cloud hanging over my days.

Apparently it’s all about perspective. Pretty obvious indeed. And I know that, anyway.

But. Somehow. My.

VERY MUCH CHERISHED

perspective

has gotten lost.

In June…lost…without a whiff of an idea of a trace whatsoever.

in search of the HAPPY VIRUS…all those months ago in Cambodia…

So when I had to leave a bit early due to a rather unhappy work related situation, I wandered out of the air-conned building into the way-too-hot ‘real world’ of tropical Darwin with the best intention to get a little routine into my life – something pretty banal, pretty obvious but according to the powers of studied happiness an apparently proven way of shifting perspective…from DOOM and GLOOM to a bit less of the same…I am all for LESS DOOM AND GLOOM, and this is what I do:

Every day, somehow drag THREE incidents/ occasions/ events/ LITTLE THINGS out of their hiding and declare them GOOD STUFF…so for me, today’s highlights have been (in no exact order!)

Number ONE : Being presented with an alligator shaped OVEN MITTEN (see picture above). Not only a rather pleasing green and yellow and red and white (teeth) object of cloth, it also came with no expectations to become a more involved person acting out in a kitchen (at least this is my take on it). The nice person giving it to me knows about my hopeless fascination with reptiles, especially crocs and their mates…

Number TWO : My conversation with the giver of alligator mittens and some far-fetched ideas about our next moves – including the cat, of course. The fact that even after some added PERSPECTIVE and hours later those slightly mad ideas still feel JUST RIGHT and exciting…haven’t had that one in a while!

Number THREE : the way 4 black upholstery black ’rounded head’ nails made just the right finish for a sandal I was working on…size and color and all. Now I have to source a big bucket full of them for future sandals…still smiling when thinking about it.

perspective...looking for those THREE good things from above...

Works for me. Nothing even remotely spiritual or political and not attached to any weirdo religion or message of whatever people need to feel better about themselves…just a useful reflection of my day and my choice of outlook.

And very happy to report that my overall view on all things relating to ‘making shoes in Bali’ is improving as well…for various reasons.

Next step: getting the launch done and those shoes out there…August 3rd at the Qantas Hangar 5-8pm….and the rest will happen.

Somehow.
